FanDuel MLB: Sunday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Sunday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

PITCHER

Aaron Nola, PHI at PIT ($7,600): There don't appear to be many ideal bargains on the bump Sunday, so paying up for top options may be the best bet. But if you're willing to roll the dice, Nola, in his return from the disabled list, could be worth a look. He threw 83 pitches in his final rehab tune up, so he shouldn't be too limited by pitch count, and the Pirates rank 28th with a .291 wOBA against righties, and 29th with a .134 ISO. Nola's strikeouts were down in his three starts prior to injury (21.7 percent), but he's shown the ability to miss bats, posting a 27.0 fan rate last year.

CATCHER

Martin Maldonado, LAA at NYM ($2,600): Maldonado boasts a team-leading .532 wOBA against lefties, .130 higher than Mike Trout in just four fewer at-bats. That he didn't start Saturday night seemingly makes him a safe bet to return to the lineup Sunday afternoon, where he'll have a juicy matchup with Tommy Milone, who has allowed 11 runs in his last 12.2 innings.

FIRST BASE

Eric Thames, MIL at CHC ($3,800): Thames is priced $800 less than the top option, and that alone seems to suggest a bargain. He's posted a .434 wOBA and .320 ISO against right handers and could be an afterthought to casual players when seeing Jake Arrieta on the bump opposing him. But Arrieta has allowed nine runs in his last 9.2 innings, and is surrendering a .372 wOBA to lefties over 83 batters faced.

SECOND BASE

Cesar Hernandez, PHI vs. PIT ($3,000): Hernandez has broken out of a mini-slump in his first two games at Pittsburgh, going 3-for-8 with three runs and a walk after previously going 1-for-14 over four games. He's been much better from the left side, hitting .324 compared to .240 from the right, resulting in a .371 wOBA. That should give him a safe floor with plenty of upside against Chad Kuhl, who is allowing a .486 wOBA and 1.176 OPS to lefties this year.

THIRD BASE

Anthony Rendon, WAS at ATL ($3,300): There are 10 players at the hot corner priced higher than Rendon, including Josh Donaldson, who hasn't played since mid-April. Yes, Rendon's mired in a bit of slump, having not posted double-digit fantasy points in his last five outings. But his struggles make for a nice contrarian play in a loaded Nats lineup that boasts seven regulars with a wOBA of at least .345 against lefties. Rendon (.350 wOBA) should be in the mix against leftie Jaime Garcia, who has allowed five homers and a .350 wOBA to right-handed bats.

SHORTSTOP

Eric Sogard, MIL at CHC ($2,800): We've touched on Cubs' starter Jake Arrieta's struggles previously, and taking a mini-stack against a struggling top-tier arm may not be ideal. Nor is simply playing the hot hand, which has proven to be less than advantageous on a daily basis. But I've grown increasingly disinterested in shortstop options and am willing to gamble on Sogard's white-hot left-handed bat hitting atop the Brew Crew's order. The career .243 hitter with a .625 OPS has a .476 batting average and 1.512 OPS over 21 at-bats, giving him immense upside with minimal risk at a near throwaway position.

OUTFIELD

Charlie Blackmon, COL at CIN ($4,300): The only hesitation in a Rockies stack Sunday against Bronson Arroyo is the weather. Should this game happen, Arroyo brings a 6.31 ERA into the start and has been equally vulnerable to righties and lefties (.372 wOBA to left handers, .368 to right). Colorado has scored 20 runs in their first two games at Great American Ballpark, suggesting great upside for Blackmon as he hits atop the order. His .403 wOBA and .283 ISO certainly don't hurt.

Corey Dickerson, TAM vs. NYY ($3,800): Dickerson is the only Rays regular with a wOBA north of .330 against lefties, making him the safest choice by far against a struggling CC Sabathia. His .427 wOBA and .234 ISO should play well here.

Denard Span, SFG at STL ($3,000): Span had hit safely in seven straight prior to Saturday night, a span that saw him go 13-of-34 with his only two homers of the year. He should have a puncher's chance at a double-digit scoring outing against Adam Wainwright, who is allowing lefties to post a .390 wOBA against him and, despite coming off seven shutout innings in his last start, has allowed eight runs over his last 18.1 frames.
