Yahoo DFS Hockey: Sunday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Hockey series.

Only two of Sunday's six NHL games start after 7 PM, making for a meager evening slate. The lack of options doesn't necessarily mean there will be a lack of scoring though, as two of the league's top six offenses will be in action. Below are the guys expected to provide the best value, and those expected to disappoint.

GOALIE

Anthony Stolarz, PHI vs. CGY ($20): Stolarz is the obvious option as your No. 2 goaltender in his NHL debut. His price is barely over half that of the night's other options, and he'll be going against a weak Flames offense that has mustered just 2.26 goals per game. The savings this pick gives you are way too tempting to turn down.

Goalie to Avoid

Mike Condon, OTT at NYR ($27): Condon is likely to start the second game of Ottawa's back-to-back set with Craig Anderson getting the nod Saturday against the Hurricanes. His low price doesn't equate to good bang for the buck against the league's most prolific offense, though. Keep the backup stashed on the bench in this tough matchup.

CENTER

Kevin Hayes, NYR vs. OTT ($21): Hayes' offseason workout regimen has continued to pay off, as the third-year pro has enjoyed an excellent start with 10 goals and 19 points through 22 games. He's working as the first-line center for the league's most effective offense, and should continue to put up excellent numbers in that role. Roll Hayes out with confidence, especially given the lack of alternatives.

Center to Avoid

Kyle Turris, OTT at NYR ($16): Turris has only 12 points, and his production should only fall further once his career-high 22 percent shooting percentage drifts closer to his career mark of 10.7 percent. Don't expect a strong performance here against one of the league's best goaltenders in Henrik Lundqvist.

WING

Michael Frolik, CGY at PHI ($14): Frolik leads the Flames with 14 points, yet is valued at just $14. That value is much too good to pass up against the league's worst defensive team, especially with a rookie goaltender making his NHL debut in net. There should be no shortage of scoring from both sides, and Frolik is among the likeliest Calgary player to get on the scoreboard despite his low price.

Mark Stone, OTT at NYR ($17): If you're going to go with any Senators player, Stone is the most sensible option. He had found the back of the net in two straight games heading into the weekend, and has an impressive career rate of 0.74 points per game. Despite that impressive statistic, the 24-year-old is only the third-most expensive winger on his own team. That makes him a solid value play despite the tough matchup.

Wings to Avoid

Jakub Voracek, PHI vs. CGY ($22): Voracek hasn't gotten on the scoresheet in six games, and isn't a smart investment even against the Flames. Wait for the slumping winger to get his confidence back before utilizing him, especially given the sizable downside Voracek has displayed with a minus-9 rating.

Chris Kreider, NYR vs. OTT ($23): Kreider has just one goal and one assist in five games since returning from a neck injury, but continues to be the most expensive winger on the Rangers. He skated just 14:59 in New York's last game against the Flyers, and should be avoided until either his price comes down or his role rises back up.

DEFENSE

Shayne Gostisbehere, PHI vs. CGY ($21): This matchup with a Flames team that has allowed 3.0 goals per game and manages just 75.3 percent on the penalty kill is perfect for the offensive-minded Gostisbehere. The sophomore blueliner's confidence should be on the rise after scoring on one of his five shots Friday against the Rangers, and he has displayed plenty of offensive ability at both even strength and with the extra man given his 57 points and 27 power-play points through 87 career games. Get Gostisbehere at a discount before his price starts to climb back up as his slow start fades into oblivion.

Mark Giordano, CGY at PHI ($20): Giordano's excellent all-around ability makes him a bargain at both ends, especially against a defensively vulnerable Flyers team. He's averaging 8.4 fantasy points per game over his past five despite posting just two assists in that span, but could break out offensively here. The combination of high floor and high ceiling makes Giordano a can't-miss value, despite the subpar level displayed by his teammates to this point.

Defensemen to Avoid

Michael Del Zotto, PHI vs. CGY ($16): Del Zotto has been a healthy scratch a couple times recently, and even this plus matchup likely won't be enough to reverse his fortunes. The offensive-minded blueliner has been poor at both ends of the ice, and there's little reason to expect much to be different here even if he plays.

Dan Girardi, NYR vs. OTT ($17): Girardi is priced alongside some offensively gifted options at $17, but lacks their upside. The veteran possession anchor provides much of his value through blocked shots, which makes him a subpar option on a night that shouldn't lack for offensive fireworks.
