The Armband: Gameweek 33 Captaincy Analysis

This article is part of our The Armband series.

Last weekend was ideal for fantasy soccer owners in that a lot of the big names came through on the score sheet. Harry Kane scored yet another nice goal, Dimitri Payet put in another excellent free kick and even my bold captain selection of Hector Bellerin was one of the higher point-getters, as he scored and secured a clean sheet.

Unfortunately, not every gameweek goes that way. If that were the case, this would be easy. There were also downfalls to Gameweek 32, as Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez couldn't muster anything in a favorable home match. Both Leicester players were top captain choices for some.

With double gameweeks set to take over as the campaign winds down, it's time to stack rosters with players that will see the most action. That means Liverpool and Everton, who both have played a league-low 30 matches. Everton and Crystal Palace are the two with a double this week.

The first – and maybe only – player that comes to mind for Everton is Romelu Lukaku. The Toffees have failed to score in their last two, but Lukaku still has 18 goals and six assists on the season. Even with two road matches in the double gameweek, it's hard to ignore the forward.

Of midfielders, Aaron Lennon may surprisingly be the best play. The speedy winger has made an immediate impact since coming into the squad this year and scored four goals in five matches prior to Everton's two-match drought.

It's hard to see many backing Palace players, but at the least the Eagles have two home games. If Emmanuel Adebayor is healthy enough, he could deserve a look, or even defender Scott Dann, as Palace host Norwich in their first game and the clean sheet possibility is there.

But for owners not wanting to use the double gameweek, there is an obvious option that stands out: Sergio Aguero and Manchester City, coming off a 4-0 drubbing, are host to West Brom. The Baggies have been decent this year and only allowed 16 goals in 15 road matches, but it's hard to pass up Aguero at the Etihad. Meanwhile, Kevin De Bruyne is back from injury and could be a sneaky play, as long as he's ready to play a full 90.

Harry Kane and Spurs have a tough matchup going against Manchester United, but as seen last weekend, there's no reason to bet against Kane in his current form. The Premier League's goal leader has 11 goals in his last 11 matches.

At first glance, the West Ham-Arsenal match doesn't look like a producer of many fantasy points, but goals should be had. The Gunners have scored at least two goals in four straight road matches. The Hammers are usually stouter defensively at home, but due to injuries along the back line, that hasn't been the case of late, as West Ham have allowed at least two goals in three straight, including last weekend's 2-2 home draw to Crystal Palace.

That means Dimitri Payet could be looked at again, as well as Alexis Sanchez, who has scored or assisted in four straight league matches.

Leicester City deserve a mention, but it's been hard to trust the Foxes for fantasy purposes as they've been focusing on 1-0 wins. That reason, combined with a road match, means I'll stay away, even if it is against lowly Sunderland.

Daniel Sturridge has been a nice boost to Liverpool in recent matches and could also be backed in a home match against Stoke. He has scored or assisted in his last three appearances.

Personally, I prefer Graziano Pelle this week in a tasty matchup against a Newcastle squad that has been miserable away from home this season.

Gameweek 33 Captaincy Rankings:

1. Romelu Lukaku, Everton
2. Sergio Aguero, Man City
3. Alexis Sanchez, Arsenal
4. Harry Kane, Tottenham
5. Graziano Pelle, Southampton
