2024 Projections
2024 Fantasy Outlook
The 12th overall pick in this year’s draft, Nix seemingly has little competition for the starting job in Denver with only career backup Jarrett Stidham and first-round bust Zach Wilson standing in his way. Nix’s best attribute is avoiding negative plays, as he threw 26 INTs in five years as a collegiate starter and took 10 sacks in two years at Oregon. Nix is a skilled passer, though he doesn’t have the arm talent of the other first-round quarterbacks from the 2024 Draft. Oregon’s offense didn’t ask him to do much downfield, instead relying on a heavy diet of screen passes and quick throws, which explains how he set the NCAA single-season record for completion percentage (77.4) last season. Indeed, his 6.8-yard average target depth was the lowest in this year’s draft. At 6-2, 214, Nix is reasonably athletic and can throw on the run but lacks an elite trait. Nix's quick release and processing ability could make him a good fit for Sean's Payton offense -- a la Drew Brees in his later years -- and if anyone is NFL ready it should be Nix, whose 61 starts were an NCAA record for a QB. The Broncos drafted Oregon teammate Troy Franklin in the fourth round to join Courtland Sutton in an otherwise lackluster wideout corps, and Nix should add some rushing stats after posting 1,613 yards and 38 TDs in college. RANKS
Part of three-way job battle
Coach Sean Payton has made it clear Nix, Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson are competing for the starting QB job, ESPN.com's Jeff Legwold reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton said Thursday that Nix is "farther along" than most rookies would be at the same juncture, citing Nix's intelligence and NCAA QB record of 61 starts as likely explanations for his ability to learn the Denver offense quickly. The rookie first-round pick opened Thursday's practice with the starters, but Payton downplayed the significance afterward, mentioning that Stidham got more first-team snaps Tuesday and Wilson took the majority Wednesday. Payton said all three are doing well so far and expressed confidence that the Broncos have a good QB room, though he also used the term "orphan dogs" to describe the trio of Nix, Stidham and Wilson.

Gets praise from Payton
Nix received compliments from head coach Sean Payton on Thursday for his progress thus far, Jeff Legwold of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Payton noted Nix was "farther along than most would be," adding the rookie out of Oregon was "extremely smart" and quickly picking up the offense. Nix even opened Thursday's OTA practice with the starters, but Payton emphasized nothing should be read into that decision and repeatedly stressed Nix, Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson are in a three-way competition for the top job.
