RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2013

Subscribe now to see our 2013 outlook.

2012

Burriss saw limited time with the Giants last season, and when he played, it was ugly (.204/.253/.212). He fared better in the minors, posting a .386 OBP with 24 steals over just 175 at-bats, but it came in the hitter-friendly PCL league as a 26-year-old. His speed makes him somewhat intriguing as a fantasy player, but Burriss possesses zero power. He projects to make the Giants this year as a utility infielder.

2011

After a broken foot delayed his 2010 debut, Burriss hit .278 over 273 at-bats in Triple-A Fresno. His activity on the basepaths was underwhelming (11-for-16 on stolen-base attempts), and his power was non-existent (.333 SLG). With the left side of the Giants' infield unsettled, there's a chance Burriss enters 2011 with the big club as a utility player, but he offers little to no value in fantasy leagues.

2010

Burriss was given the opportunity to win the Giants’ second-base job last year, but he failed miserably, hitting just .238 with zero homers over 202 at-bats. After getting sent down to Triple-A, his season ended in July with a fractured foot. San Francisco has since addressed its middle-infield situation by trading for and later signing Freddy Sanchez to an extension, so Burriss’ role will be as a utility man at best. More likely, he’ll spend most of 2010 in the minors.

2009

Burriss finished the 2008 season with a .283 batting average and 13 steals over 240 at-bats. That was accompanied by just eight extra-base hits, but he did post an impressive 24:23 K:BB ratio as well. After the Giants signed Edgar Renteria to a two-year deal, Burriss will have to compete with Kevin Frandsen and Eugenio Velez for the starting job at second base, but he should be considered the favorite. His ability to steal bases gives him some fantasy potential.

2008

Burriss has decent on-base ability and blazing speed, but whether that translates into him becoming a future regular remains up in the air. He has a good glove at shortstop but lacks in the power department, hitting no home runs and collecting only 20 extra-base hits in 504 at-bats in the minors last year. However, he did steal 68 bases, so there is some fantasy upside in the making. At 23, the switch-hitting Burriss is still young, so there's plenty of time for improvement.
