Yahoo DFS Baseball: Saturday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

Pitcher

Bartolo Colon, NYM vs. ATL ($42): It should be no secret by now that I enjoy picking on the Braves, who hold the fifth-lowest OPS in the league against right-handed pitchers. Colon can be a sneaky play against weak offenses as his efficiency in the strike zone has the potential to result in a lot of innings and a higher win probability. The Braves have tallied just a 31 percent fly ball rate, which should allow Colon to find success by keeping the ball on the ground.

Jon Gray, COL at SD ($37): Gray is part of a new wave of exciting arms in Colorado's rotation, having tallied a 25 percent strikeout rate over 145.2 innings (25 starts). The Padres are the worst team in the league against righties according to wOBA and are a bottom 10 squad against the slider, a pitch Gray throws 28 percent of the time.

Catcher

Drew Butera, KC at CWS ($9): Butera's offensive explosion appears to have materialized out of thin air, but it's far enough along that it is worth talking about as he has notched a .212 ISO over 108 plate appearances. Opposing starter James Shields tweaked his back in his latest shellacking at the hands of the Twins, but will take his 6.07 ERA over 151.1 innings to the mound nonetheless. It is worth noting that Butera has started the last two games in place of Salvador Perez, who is dealing with a swollen wrist. If Perez is able to return, users can pivot to Nick Hundley ($15) in his matchup against Christian Friedrich and the Padres.

First Base

Brandon Belt, SF at ARI ($13): Archie Bradley has been scorched by lefties in 2016, allowing a .525 slugging percentage over 50.1 innings. Belt should be able to send a few balls into the desert air as he will pit his 46 percent fly ball rate against Bradley's groundball profile.

Second Base

Ian Kinsler, DET vs. BAL ($14): Ubaldo Jimenez took me to the woodshed with a complete game against the Rays earlier this week and while he has looked good in his three starts since rejoining the rotation, he has tallied an xFIP close to 5.00 in each contest. Kinsler has been solid against same-handed pitchers in 2016 as evidenced by his .182 ISO and 35 percent hard contact rate.

Third Base

Matt Carpenter, STL vs. MIL ($13): Carpenter has shown above average power against righties, notching a .280 ISO over 279 at-bats. Chase Anderson may find it difficult to keep the ball in the yard against a hitter like Carpenter, as he has surrendered 10 homers to lefties in 60.1 frames.

Shortstop

Jose Reyes, NYM at ATL ($19): John Gant has thrown the ball reasonably well in his starts this season but has allowed a combined 1.3 HR/9 rate against lefties over 21.1 innings. Reyes has logged a 4.0 runs above average mark against the changeup, a pitch Gant throws 23 percent of the time.

Outfield

Ian Desmond, TEX at LAA ($15): I'm tempted to recommend that you jam your lineups full of as many Rangers as possible against Daniel Wright, who allowed a startling 11 earned runs over just 13 innings as a member of the Reds. He was also trounced at Triple-A Louisville to the tune of a 6.13 ERA. Desmond has kept a .183 ISO and a hard contact rate of better than 31 percent against righties this season.

Brandon Guyer, CLE at MIN ($13): Guyer is the quintessential major league platoon bat, as his OPS jumps almost .400 points against left-handed pitchers. Hector Santiago will enter the contest having tallied a 5.31 xFIP against righty hitters.

Mark Trumbo, BAL at DET ($19): Jordan Zimmermann will return from the disabled list to take on the Orioles. It seems likely that Zimmermann will have issues with the powerful Baltimore lineup, as he allowed 17 earned runs in his last three starts and was blasted for seven runs (two earned) over 4.2 innings in his final rehab outing. Trumbo has logged a .286 ISO against right-handed hurlers.

Other Options: Miguel Sano, MIN vs. CLE ($18); Joc Pederson, LAD at MIA ($16); Curtis Granderson, NYM at ATL ($15)
