Yahoo DFS Baseball: Sunday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

PITCHER

Kyle Hendricks, CHC vs. LAD ($48): Hendricks stumped the Dodgers over eight innings in his only start against them this season, allowing just three hits. He was even better overall at Wrigley Field this season, where he posted a 9-2 record, 1.32 ERA and allowed a .228 wOBA and .199 batting average over 94.2 innings. While he did have an early exit against the Giants in Game 2 of the NLDS, he has the right conditions for redemption Sunday.

Trevor Bauer, CLE at TOR ($31): Bauer was actually a better pitcher on the road this season, posting a 6-4 record, 3.67 ERA, and allowing only five homers over a 83.1 innings. He also was excellent against the Blue Jays in two appearances (one start), finishing with a 1-0 record, 1.38 ERA and .159 batting average against over 13 innings. He struck out a whopping 13 Jays in the one start, an Aug. 19 outing that generated 39 fantasy points. Corey Kluber and Josh Tomlin have caused the Toronto bats to go cold over the first two games of the series and Bauer stands a good chance to make it three straight.

CATCHER

Russell Martin, TOR vs. CLE ($13):  After talking up Bauer, I'm suggesting Martin as a good play at backstop on the two-game slate anyhow. Bauer should be solid but not unhittable, and Martin brings a .500 batting average with a homer and two RBI in a six at-bat sample against him, along with a .343 wOBA overall at Rogers Centre this season. He also tagged righties for a .333 wOBA and 31.3 percent hard contact rate at home, giving him some upside at a bargain price.

FIRST BASE

Carlos Santana, CLE at TOR ($20) Santana is one of several lefty bats that offer plenty of upside against Blue Jays starter Marcus Stroman. The slugger blasted right-handed pitching to the tune of a .388 wOBA, .285 ISO and 30 homers this season, and he has posted a .375 batting average over eight career at-bats against Stroman. The Blue Jays starter also gave up a 4.59 ERA at Rogers Centre this season.

SECOND BASE

Ben Zobrist, CHC vs. LAD ($11): Zobrist had a .301 batting average and .367 wOBA against left-handed pitching this season, along with a 31.3 percent hard contact rate. He also came into Saturday's Game 1 against the Dodgers with a three-game hitting streak from the last trio of contests against the Giants in the divisional series, which included a pair of doubles. Clayton Kershaw is obviously no picnic to face, but on such a limited slate, Zobrist shapes up as an intriguing, cost-effective tournament play for those looking to come down from Jason Kipnis ($18) at second base.

THIRD BASE

Jose Ramirez, CLE vs. TOR ($17): Ramirez posted a .351 wOBA against right-handed pitching this season and also was hot coming into the ALCS. He went 5-for-12 in the three-game sweep of the Red Sox in the divisional series and stands a chance of reviving his bat against Marcus Stroman, who's been more hittable at Rogers Centre this season.

SHORTSTOP

Corey Seager, LAD at CHC ($16): Seager pounded right-handed pitching all season, making him a high upside play against Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks despite the latter's typical dominance at Wrigley Field. The slugging shortstop had a .334 batting average, .400 wOBA, .223 ISO and 21 homers against righty arms this past season, along with a 39.6 percent hard contact rate. Hendricks was tough against both handedness in what was an excellent season, but he was a bit more vulnerable to left-handed batters.

OUTFIELD

Dexter Fowler, CHC vs. LAD ($14): Fowler has a history of success against Clayton Kershaw, slashing .409/.458/.500 over 44 career at-bats. The switch-hitting Fowler also pounded lefties this past season, generating a .380 wOBA and 34.7 percent hard contact rate against them, while Kershaw gave up all eight homers on the season to right-handed hitters, including seven on the road. Although he generally dominated in any scenario, Kershaw's highest degree of vulnerability came on the road against righty bats, furthering Fowler's case as what should be a low-owned tournament play.

Lonnie Chisenhall, CLE at TOR ($12): Chisenhall comes with a five-game hitting streak and a .429 batting average against Stroman over seven career at-bats. He also posted a .333 wOBA against right-handed pitching during the regular season.

Michael Saunders, TOR vs. CLE ($10): Saunders has enjoyed some success against Trevor Bauer over 12 career plate appearances, with five hits, including a double, and three walks. He also had a .359 wOBA, .213 ISO and seven homers against right-handed pitching at Rogers Centre, along with a 37.5 percent hard contact rate. Bauer also gave up a 34.7 percent hard contact rate to left-handed hitters on the road this year.
