FanDuel MLB: Tuesday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Tuesday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

Pitcher

Luis Severino, NYY vs. CWS ($7,700): There's a good handful of top-priced arms available Tuesday, so spending up here is certainly an option. If you're looking to save a bit and go against the grain, though, Severino is worth a look. He's struck out 17 in 12.0 innings over two starts, and the White Sox rank 28th in runs scored in the early going, having scored just 44 runs in 12 games entering play Tuesday.

Catcher

Brian McCann, HOU vs. LAA ($3,000): McCann sat out Monday, virtually assuring he's starting Tuesday against Ricky Nolasco, who's allowed five home runs in 16.2 innings to open the year. McCann posted a .334 wOBA against righties last year, hitting 17 of his 20 long balls against them. With two veterans matching up against each other, there's some traction to head to head stats as well, and McCann is 23-of-68 (.338) with eight home runs, five doubles and 26 RBI against Nolasco.

First Base

Eric Thames, MIL at CHC ($3,400): Thames splits aren't overly meaningful having spent the last three years playing overseas, but there isn't a hotter bat in baseball right now. With another homer Monday, Thames has gone deep in five straight games. He's hit in 10 straight games and in 11 of 12 to open the year, five times having multiple hits. Eight players are priced higher at this position, which gives Thames a great chance to outperform his tag. Cubs starter Brett Anderson has surprisingly been more vulnerable to lefties, allowing a career .329 wOBA, in line with his .308 wOBA allowed in 2015, his most recent year as a starter.

Second Base

Brian Dozier, MIN vs. CLE ($3,900): Paying up at a non-premium position isn't usually a winning strategy, but Dozier appears worth his tag in this matchup. He's got three multi-hit games in his last eight outings, homering twice in that span, and owns a .366 wOBA against righties since the start of 2016. Setting the table for an offense that will face Indians' starter Josh Tomlin, who has allowed 13 earned runs in 6.1 innings to open the year seems to set Dozier up for a big day.

Third Base

Mike Moustakas, KAN vs. SFG ($3,300): Moustakas is in the midst of a power surge, having hit five long balls to open the year, seemingly putting him well on his way to besting his career high of 22 set in 2015, his last fully healthy year. That he hit seven in 27 games before injury last year suggests there's a growing trend here, and that newfound power upside paired with Moustakas being the 15th highest priced player at the hot corner gives him some profit potential. A matchup with Matt Cain, who allowed lefties to post a .386 wOBA and .901 OPS last season, certainly doesn't hurt.

Shortstop

Taylor Motter, SEA vs. MIA ($3,000): It remains difficult to go against the Giants' Brandon Crawford ($2,700) as a rare cheap cleanup hitter, but Motter can offer a different option and likely isn't too cost prohibitive. It's a small sample size, as Motter has just 32 career plate appearances against lefties, but he owns a .436 wOBA and 1.007 OPS in that span. Tuesday starter Wei-Yin Chen allowed a .334 wOBA to righties last year, and surrendered 21 of his 22 long balls to them.

Outfield

Adam Eaton, WAS at ATL ($3,700): Braves' starter Mike Foltynewicz lasted only 3.2 innings in his first start, and sports a career 4.95 ERA over 234.1 career innings, suggesting he's ripe for the picking by the Nats on Tuesday. Eaton is off to a sensational start in his new home, owning a .414 wOBA against righties while walking at an 18.0 percent rate. Six of his 13 hits to date against righties have gone for extra bases, giving Eaton a safe floor in a plus matchup, but also a higher than normal ceiling for a player with his limited power.

Aaron Hicks, NYY vs. CWS ($3,100): The Yankees offense has awoken during their current homestand, averaging six runs over the last seven games. Hicks has been an integral part of that, scoring five times in his past four games. White Sox starter Miguel Gonzalez has allowed six walks and five runs in 10.2 innings to open 2017, which should play into Hicks' newfound patience at the plate, where he's walking 25.8 percent of the time after not walking more than 8.7 percent in either of the last two seasons.

Lonnie Chisenhall, CLE at MIN ($3,000): Chisenhall posted a .333 wOBA against righties last year while hitting all eight of his home runs off of them. He's already blasted two in just 12 plate appearances this season entering a matchup with righty Phil Hughes. Hughes has a respectable 3.86 ERA through two starts, but this is a pitcher who had a 5.95 ERA a season ago. He also surrendered a .412 wOBA to left-handers in 2016, which offers promise for Chisenhall to continue his hot start to the season.
