Blogging the Auction

I'm about to represent Rotowire in CBSSportsline's annual NL-Only Experts league (5x5, 12 teams including Will Carroll representing Baseball Prospectus), and since we're switching to an auction format this season I figured it might be an interesting experiment to live blog it.

Auction starts in about 15 minutes... any guesses as to what Santana will go for? Pujols? Reyes vs. Ramirez?

Comments....

Some interesting early prices:

Braun ($39) vs. David Wright ($43)
Santana ($44) vs. Peavy ($39)
Pujols ($38) vs. Fielder ($41)
Holliday ($40) vs. Soriano ($40)
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 10:12:00 AM

Bidding just passed $50 on Reyes...
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 10:17:00 AM

Reyes $53... wow.
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 10:17:00 AM

My first buy: Brandon Webb at $31
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 10:21:00 AM

Reyes $15 more than Pujols? Crazy.
Posted by MPStopa at 2/6/2008 10:21:00 AM

Sounds like more than a lot of people are concerned about Pujols' elbow. I haven't adjusted my ranking on him yet, but had a pretty good debate with Eric Karabell on-air today about him.
Posted by Erickson at 2/6/2008 10:34:00 AM

Tejada for $23, so about as much concern there as over Albert...
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 10:35:00 AM

First cheapie: AMiller, Florida $3
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 10:40:00 AM

Wow- Ryan Zimmerman just went for $32... I'm liking my Encarnacion buy at $19 a LOT better now.
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 10:42:00 AM

Jay Bruce, $7
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 10:51:00 AM

I don't know why anyone drafts, I really don't. I was in the AL-only auction yesterday. I'll post something about it somewhere else.
Posted by spianow at 2/6/2008 10:53:00 AM

First crickets: Orlando Hernandez, $1... kind of fitting in a way.
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 10:54:00 AM

Nomah, $3... interesting.
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 10:57:00 AM

At the first break, here's my team:

Gonzalez, SD $27
Encarnacion, Cin $19
Hart, Mil $27
Webb, Ari $31
Hamels, Phi $27

I'm a shade over the middle of the pack in terms of spending, so no big worries yet about some of those offensive holes.

Some of the top players left:

C - McCann
1B - Helton
2B - Uggla, Weeks
3B - Kouzmanoff
SS - Stephen Drew, Khalil Greene, Felipe Lopez
OF - Burrell, Hermida, Kemp, Rowand etc. Also Fukodome
SP - Oswalt, Zambrano, Chris Young, Haren, and both Giant young guns
RP - Wagner, Lidge, Soriano, Capps, Chad Cordero
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 11:02:00 AM

Scanning over the rosters, Holliday at $40 looks like a huge steal compared to other OF prices. (That same team also spent $21 on Juan Pierre though... so much for those profits).
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 11:05:00 AM

Oliver Perez for $15... yikes
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 11:11:00 AM

Lilly went for $12 just before Perez too
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 11:11:00 AM

Victorino, $26... also interesting
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 11:13:00 AM

Bourn for $19... SB inflation just kicked in there
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 11:26:00 AM

One of my potential sleepers, Cody Ross, just went for $6... I hate when that happens
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 11:32:00 AM

I'm guessing Weeks goes for $19-21.
Posted by spianow at 2/6/2008 11:36:00 AM

I wouldn't pick on a $21 Juan Pierre; as limited as he is in the real world, surely he's worth that in fantasy. Plus you can always trade guys like that, at least in my experiences I've found that to be true.
Posted by spianow at 2/6/2008 11:37:00 AM

I'll also guess $22 on Cain.
Posted by spianow at 2/6/2008 11:38:00 AM

And btw, great idea to live blog this. One thing I love about an auction this early is that it's so undefined. By the time I get to Tout Wars, as much as I love that weekend, the prices are so clear on everyone, it's like every player has a bar code on his arm. The market is defined. Today, though, truly anything is possible. You'll see far more variance today than you will in 4-5 weeks. Come the middle of March, the game becomes trying to beat the biases that have shown in the market.
Posted by spianow at 2/6/2008 11:41:00 AM

What did the other star shortstops go for? Saw $53 for Reyes.
Posted by spianow at 2/6/2008 11:49:00 AM

Interesting that you spent on two aces. Not saying it's wrong, only not that usual to see.
Posted by Erickson at 2/6/2008 11:50:00 AM

My team at the second break:

Gonzalez, SD $27
Weeks, Mil $31 (!!!)
Encarnacion, Cin $19
Hart, Mil $27
Fukodome, Chi $17
Webb, Ari $31
Hamels, Phi $27
Hill, Chi $17

Got into a bidding war with Will Carroll over Weeks, but the options at 2B were getting thin.
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 11:55:00 AM

Cain went for $18... Gallardo for $21.

The big three SS prices: Reyes $53, Ramirez $44, Rollins $39. Tulo went for $30.
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 11:56:00 AM

pianow, if Pierre were sure to be starting $21's not a bad price. If he ends up as a 4th outfielder by May though... that's a lot of price for a lot of risk, IMO.
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 11:58:00 AM

Even without hearing from the other owners, this is a pretty interesting read. Maybe our staff league auction should be live-blogged.
Posted by MPStopa at 2/6/2008 11:59:00 AM

Everything should be live-blogged, MPS.
Posted by spianow at 2/6/2008 12:02:00 PM

I love Weeks, but you should have stuck him on Will's team at $30.
Posted by spianow at 2/6/2008 12:05:00 PM

Wow, Maybin for $10 in a one-year league...
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 12:11:00 PM

I'm also curious what time you guys finish. We didn't take any breaks for the AL-only auction, so it finished around 4:30 (off a 1 pm start). I was done and ordering take-out at 4:05.

Will's always got different ideas for fantasy. He's the Tim Wakefield in the room.
Posted by spianow at 2/6/2008 12:21:00 PM

Started at 1, but we're in the middle of a big snafu right now with AI kicking in for one of the owners and having to back out some players...
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 12:33:00 PM

AL-only prices, for what it's worth, are blog posted. I'll keep my folly purchases secret for the moment.
Posted by spianow at 2/6/2008 12:46:00 PM

We're back and running... Jeff Francis for $14
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 12:46:00 PM

Just picked up Votto ($11) and Milledge ($8) in quick succession... offensive upside! Yay!
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 12:51:00 PM

First elite set-up man off the board: Marmol at $8
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 1:01:00 PM

I always feel that closers-in-waiting are bid on too expectantly in a lot of expert groups. But Marmol at $8 seems reasonable to me.
Posted by spianow at 2/6/2008 1:04:00 PM

Blew my budget on Felipe Lopez, the last semi-decent MI left... now down to a $2 max, with seven spots still to fill
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 1:30:00 PM

Use that deuce carefully. To me the most interesting part of the auction is when most teams have a max bid of less than $10.
Posted by spianow at 2/6/2008 1:33:00 PM

Just grabbed Corey Patterson for $1 with my last hitter slot.
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 1:51:00 PM

My $2 player ended up being Iguchi... didn't see any pitchers left I felt strongly enough about to use it on them.
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 1:55:00 PM

My final roster, with comments, pending the reserve draft (held later by email):

C - Rabelo, Fla $1; Castro, NY $1

Usual $1 catcher strategy, although not as much upside in these particular guys as I'd like. Considered Iannetta as well, but got burned by him last year so I shied away.

1B/3B/CI - Gonzalez, SD $27; Encarnacion, Cin $19; Votto, Cin $11

A big year from Votto is going to be pretty key for my season, I think. If so I've got solid production here.

2B/SS/MI - Weeks, Mil $31; Lopez, Was $14; Iguchi, SD $2

These spots ended up being money sinks for me as I tried to cover myself in steals. I had been willing to go mid-20s for Weeks coming in, so I didn't go that much overboard, and if Lopez's head is straight he could easily earn $14. Not a total disaster, but could have been better.

OF/Ut - Hart, Mil $27; Fukodome, Chi $17; Duncan, StL $12; Milledge, Was $8; CPatterson, FA $1; Conor Jackson, Ari $7

Jackson covers me if Votto falls on his face. A couple of big question marks here though, so I'll need to take at least a couple of OFers in the reserve draft.

SP - Webb, Ari $31; Hamels, Phi $27; Hill, Chi $17; Hirsh, Col $2; Piniero, StL $1; Gallagher, Chi $1

Veru top-heavy, but I have no problem churning the bottom of the rotation through my reserve list/free agency if necessary. Piniero is a hunch pick, but Dave Duncan has worked bigger miracles.

RP - Howry, Chi $1; Rauch, Was $1; Tankersley, Fla $1

No closers, and some decent ones (Gregg and Wilson especially) went very cheaply in the end-game, but it being 5x5 I came in planning to punt saves in the auction and worry about it through free agency, and had no cash left to adjust when the market shifted thanks to that MI spending. That strategy bit me in the ass last season in this league, but it played a big role in my league title two years ago.
Posted by ESiegrist at 2/6/2008 2:15:00 PM

Thanks Erik and SP for your thoughts. I'm so fresh to the new season that I haven't crystallized many thoughts on trends, what's good and bad, etc., so every little bit of information is good. I also like bid prices from a real league, too.

Thanks again and good luck Erik,
Topper

Yep, Staff League 2 auction will be live-blogged, assuming we can get 18 guys to agree to a date/time.
Posted by vtadave at 2/8/2008 9:47:00 AM

$19 for Encarnacion is a surprise. I am thinking of extending his deal one year in my NL-only league. $10 for each of the next two years instead of $5 for one. Can do the same for Oliver Perez, but I only have him for $1. $1 for one year or $6 for each of the next two.?
