Closer Watch

Marlins – Steve Cishek got perhaps the easiest kind of save Monday, entering with two on, two out and a four-run lead. He got the out. After suffering from some early-season inconsistency, Cishek's been a machine for the last month-plus, allowing just two runs in his last 19 appearances. Where his job security was once in question, Cishek's given the Marlins a feeling of certainty in the ninth inning. Now it's just a matter of Miami continuing to create save situations consistently.

Diamondbacks – J.J. Putz blew his first save chance since returning from the DL on Monday, giving up a one-run lead to the Mets in the ninth. David Hernandez wasn't a whole lot better, looking erratic while giving up two hits and a run in the eighth, and Heath Bell got two outs without allowing any baserunners in the seventh, but has otherwise been horrendous lately. All that is to say, Putz has some breathing room despite blowing this one.

Recommended Pickup
Ichiro Suzuki, OF, NYY – Cut loose in a lot of leagues after a bad start, Ichiro's looked a lot better lately, coming off a month of June in which he hit .292 with three homers and seven steals. You might be surprised at how many of your leagues are letting him languish on the wire. Interestingly, he's been far better against lefties than righties this year, with an .819 OPS against southpaws, but just a .603 vs. righties – and he has twice as many at-bats against righties. For his entire career, Ichiro has tended to hit pitches from both hands equally well, so there seems to be room for further course correction there as well.
