Yahoo DFS Hockey: Wednesday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Hockey series.

Three-game slates require a unique approach.

And with two of the worst road teams in the league, Ottawa and Calgary, taking the ice in opponent's buildings Wednesday, expect the Ducks and Jets to be popular stacks.

This is especially true because the third game of the night features division foes in Washington and Philadelphia that allow far fewer goals than the Senators and Flames.

The featured skaters to target are all sub-$20 players to help open up spending, allowing you to hone in on your preferred stars and accommodate an expensive starting goalie.

GOALIE

Frederik Andersen/John Gibson, ANA vs. CGY ($38) - Lineup assembly is always easier when a team's goalies are the same price. Calgary has allowed 22 goals through its past six games with just two wins, so expect the Anaheim starter to receive the goal support necessary to return the win bonus. Andersen has a .927 save percentage with 16 wins through his past 22 games, and Gibson has a .921 save percentage and six wins over his last 11 appearances. Plus, Anaheim is 49-18-8 at home over the past two seasons, including 23-6-5 this season.

Player to avoid:

Joni Ortio, CGY at ANA ($31) - Calgary is 12-22-3 on the road this season with an average of 2.46 goals per game and 3.27 goals allowed per game. Heading to the Duck Pond is a daunting task for strong teams, as previously highlighted, so even a contrarian flier on Ortio is ill-advised. He also has just five wins through 18 appearances this season with an underwhelming .903 save percentage and 2.76 goals-against average.

CENTER

Brandon Pirri, ANA vs. CGY ($15) - Being stapled to Ryan Getzlaf's side is a cushy gig, and Pirri comes at an extreme discount in an excellent matchup. Pirri has two goals and two assists through his past four games with nine shots on net, albeit with the bulk of the numbers coming in the game against Toronto last Thursday. Still, time on the No. 1 power-play unit is another plus and Pirri is a legitimate goal scorer.

Player to avoid:

Claude Giroux, PHI vs. WAS ($25) - It is risky fading the leading scorer in the National Hockey League since 2010, but Giroux has a single multi-point game through his past 10 outings and just four goals and three helpers. Add a tough divisional matchup and a hefty salary, and Giroux is high-risk investment and needs to have a monster game just to meet value.

WING

Nikolaj Ehlers, WPG vs. OTT ($16) - The rookie has sandwiched a 10-game injury absence with 18 points, including eight goals through his latest 24 outings. He also has 48 shots on net and lands in a great matchup against Ottawa. At this cap hit, Ehlers also presents excellent value given his role on the top line and No. 1 power-play unit.

Andre Burakovsky, WAS at PHI ($13) - Although reeling along in a four-game point drought, Burakovsky's salary seems low. He is locked into a secondary scoring role in all situations, the sophomore has been a 0.5 point-per-game scorer for the season and over his past 34 outings, Burakovsky has a healthy 26 points. This is an upside source of cap relief.

Player to avoid:

Mark Stone, OTT vs. WPG ($22) - The winger has slowed over his past five outings with just one goal and one assist, and the Senators have lost four of those five games. With their depth chart riddled with injuries, opponents can key on Stone, especially in road games. The cap hit is high, and Ottawa's current form and road struggles make Stone a risky investment.

DEFENSE

Jacob Trouba, WPG vs. OTT ($18) - While he hasn't fully taken advantage of his expanded role (23:53 of ice time over his past six games), Trouba lands in a cozy matchup Wednesday. The Senators allow a league-high 3.49 goals per road game and kill penalties at a league-low 74.1 percent in away contests. Trouba has 11 shots and 18 blocked shots through those six games to provide decent peripheral coverage, too.

Player to avoid:

Mark Giordano, CGY at ANA ($25) - Through the first four meetings between Anaheim and Calgary this season, Giordano has a goal and a minus-5 rating. Sticking to the theme of this being a horrible matchup for the Flames, spending up for their top defenseman in Wednesday contests is incredibly risky, and counter productive if you're starting the opposing goaltender.
