Suspended for 2 years
MiddleweightUFC
July 29, 2016
Abreu was suspended two years by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency for a positive test for steroids, MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Abreu has not fought since a June 2015 loss to Jake Collier. He has pulled out of two fights in the past year. The test found two substances in his system, both metabolites of nandrolone, an anabolic steroid. The 32-year-old fighter is eligible to fight again on July 1, 2018.
Flagged for USADA violation
MiddleweightUFC
July 3, 2016
Abreu has been flagged for a positive drug test by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, UFC.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Abreu's failed test came from an out-of-competition sample, though it was not disclosed exactly what substance he tested positive for. USADA plans to continue investigating the case before handing out an official punishment, which could last up to six months based on precedent that has been set earlier this year. At the same time, multiple fighters have already had successful appeals that have resulted in reduced suspensions, so it's anyone's guess what happens to Abreu at this point. The 32-year-old, who is coming off a loss against Jake Collier, did not have an upcoming fight booked at the time of the announcement.
Ricardo Abreu: Loses Close One Saturday To Jake Collier
MiddleweightUFC
June 6, 2015
Abreu lost to Jake Collier via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 28-29) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in New Orleans.
ANALYSIS
An argument can certainly be made that Abreu's takedowns (he landed the only three of the bout) should have won him the fight. Yet the fight was so close than neither fighter should have been surprised, no matter what the result ended up being. Abreu was due to fight Daniel Sarafian, but he got injured and Collier took the fight on short notice. He falls to 1-1 in his first two fights in the UFC.
