Brian Vickers: Indy 500 Ride Still Possible
Sprint Cup
April 14, 2016
Schmidt Peterson Motorsports team owner Sam Schmidt says NASCAR driver Brian Vickers and the late Justin Wilson's brother, Stefan, are still possibilities for the team's third car in the Indy 500, motorsport.com reports.
ANALYSIS
SPM still has a seat to fill in their third entry into this season's Indy 500. Vickers and the rest of the candidates are still in play. The veteran NASCAR driver has expressed great interest in racing in the 100th Indy 500 and has been pursuing this opportunity over the last several weeks. Currently Vickers doesn't have a regular NASCAR gig, so landing this ride would be a big boost to his racing career.

The blood clots that have plagued Vickers late in his NASCAR career cropped up yet again in 2015. He made only two starts last season, which were races Nos. 3 and 4 in the schedule, before news of his health issues again sidelined the veteran driver. Multiple drivers would replace him in the No. 55 Toyota for the rest of the season. To add to the already cloudy picture, Michael Waltrip Racing closed its doors at the end of last season. That effectively leaves Vickers without a ride to start 2016. With health issues hanging over him going into the new season and very little available in the way of open rides, we could be looking at the end of Vickers' Sprint Cup Series career. Time will tell, but things don't look very optimistic at this point.
The former Red Bull Racing driver got a second chance of sorts in 2012. Vickers landed a part-time gig with Michael Waltrip Racing, sharing the No. 55 Toyota with Mark Martin and Michael Waltrip. In just a limited, eight-race schedule the veteran driver was quite impressive. Vickers racked up three Top 5’s and five Top 10’s in that handful of starts, and he led 158 laps. The performance showed that Vickers still has the skill to perform at a high level in the Sprint Cup Series. He returns to this team in 2013 for a similar nine-race slate. Vickers will run most of the short tracks, both road courses and a couple intermediate oval events. We expect him to be just as stellar in the coming year with this solid race team.
Vickers collected five top 5's and 10 top 10's and finished 17th in the final points standings of 2005. If he follows the current trend of improvement a Chase berth could be in the works for 2006, although we feel like Vickers is more likely one of the "near" Chase teams.
