RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Whalen (hand) will start Tuesday's semifinal matchup with the Mystics.

Whalen hasn't played a game since Aug. 3 because of a hand injury, but the fact that she's being inserted into the starting lineup right away appears to indicate the Lynx have no lingering concerns over the ailment. She should be in line for a full workload in the first game of a best of five series against the Mystics. In the corresponding move, look for Renee Montgomery to return to the bench.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Whalen (hand) said she's 'ready' for Tuesday's game against the Mystics, Mitchell Hansen of the Lynx's official website reports.

As expected, Whalen will be ready for the team's first postseason game. She's been sidelined since Aug. 3 with a hand injury. During her two games against the Mystics this season, she posted 7.0 points, 6.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds across 21.5 minutes per game while shooting 62.5 percent from the field.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Whalen (hand) returned to practice Wednesday, Jon Krawczynski of the Associated Press reports.

As expected, Whalen has returned to practice in advance of the team's first playoff game after being sidelined since Aug. 3. Until there is official word, however, she should still be considered questionable for the Lynx first playoff game Tuesday.

September 3, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Whalen (hand) is expected to be ready for the playoffs, Kent Youngblood of the Star Tribune reports.

Whalen has been sidelined since Aug. 3 and while she'll be unable to take part in the Lynx's season finale on Sunday, she's fully expected to be ready for the start of the playoffs. Look for confirmation on Whalen's availability later this week. She owns averages of 8.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 4.1 assists across 23.6 minutes per game. She's also started all 22 games she's played in, but it's unclear if Whalen will immediately be re-inserted to the top unit, or if the Lynx will ultimately ease her back into the swing of things off the bench.

August 15, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Whalen is expected to be out until early September after surgery to repair a broken bone in her hand, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

Whalen has missed three games with the injury. Renee Montgomery is expected to continue to start at point guard while Whalen is out.

August 4, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Whalen (hand) underwent surgery to repair a fracture in her left hand Friday and will be out indefinitely.

Whalen -- who's averaging 8.0 points, 4.1 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game -- injured her hand during Thursday's game against the Dream. A timetable for her return has yet to be provided. As a result, Renee Montgomery and Jia Perkins figure to see additional run.

August 3, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Whalen won't return to Thursday's game against the Dream due to a left hand injury.

The exact nature of the injury hasn't been disclosed, but it's apparently uncomfortable enough for Whalen to keep her sidelined for the remainder of the game. She'll finish with eight points (3-8 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 2-2 FT), four rebounds and three assists across 21 minutes.

July 27, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Whalen finished Tuesday's 75-76 win over the Liberty with 12 points (5-8 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 2-2 FT), two rebounds, two assists, one block and three turnovers across 26 minutes.

Whalen is typically more of a distributor than a scorer, so Tuesday's 12-point showing was a nice outing coming out of the All-Star break. With season averages of 8.3 points, 2.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists across 23.5 minutes, Whalen is a borderline fantasy option, although she occasionally has a standout performance. A slightly larger workload would be especially beneficial to Whalen's value, but if she continues to hover in the low-20's, that's going to limit her upside.

July 21, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Whalen, heading into the All-Star break, is posting 8.1 points, 4.3 assists and 2.5 rebounds across 23.4 minutes per game.

Though she isn't producing eye-popping statistics, the 14-year veteran is filling out a balanced statline in her complementary role. Per 40 minutes, she's actually the fourth best dime dropper in the league, averaging 7.3 assists under that criteria. While she isn't a premier fantasy option, Whalen's ability to rack up a variety of stats in limited action can make her worth a look in DFS as a cost-effective option.

June 27, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Whalen tallied 13 points (5-11 FG, 2-3 3PT, 1-2 FT), four rebounds and four assists across 22 minutes in Sunday's victory over San Antonio.

Whalen has recorded her third straight tilt in double-figures, meaning she may be on track to have more consistent offensive outings as she's been rather unpredictable this 2017 campaign. The guard is currently averaging 8.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists across 23.9 minutes per contest.

June 18, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Whalen posted 15 points (7-14 FG, 1-3 3Pt), two rebounds and three assists across 25 minutes in Saturday's loss to the Sun.

It's been a very up-and-down season offensively for Whalen so far, as the veteran came into Saturday's contest having scored six combined points in her last two games. And while she managed to get going offensively against the Sun, Whalen is still a very risky DFS option despite the fact that her ability to distribute gives her some high upside.

June 5, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Whalen recorded a season-high 19 points (8-10 FG, 3-4 3Pt) during Saturday's 100-77 win over the Storm, while adding four rebounds and three assists across 23 minutes

Whalen had far and away her best performance of the season on the offensive side of the ball, shooting 80 percent from the field and 75 percent from deep to give her a season-high 19 points. While Saturday's scoring total is encouraging, Whalen has reached double figures just once previously this season and likely shouldn't be relied upon for her points moving forward. Her role is generally as a distributor, which tends to keep her fantasy value down overall.

May 29, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Whalen went scoreless (0-6 FG, 0-1 3PT, 0-2 FT) but handed out 10 assists in Minnesota's win over San Antonio on Sunday.

The Lynx put the game away early in the second half, outscoring the Stars a combined 44-17 in the second and third quarters. As a result, Whalen played only 20 minutes, her second-lowest total of the season.

May 24, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Whalen recorded four points (2-5 FG, 0-2 FT), one rebound, three assists, two steals and four turnovers across 24 minutes during Tuesday's 80-78 victory over the Sun.

Whalen hasn't played much of a role as a scorer this season, with her calling card largely coming as a distributor for some of the other superstars on the Lynx roster, including the likes of Maya Moore and Sylvia Fowles. She's averaged 4.8 assists so far this season, but likely needs her scoring totals to go up in order to validate her as a solid fantasy play, especially considering she's turned the ball over at least three times in each of the last three contests.

May 16, 2017

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Whalen tallied eight points (3-9 FG, 1-1 3Pt, 1-2 FT), five assists and two rebounds across 29 minutes during Sunday's 70-61 victory over the Sky.

Whalen had a solid outing in the Lynx's season opener, providing a nice mix of points and assists. Last year, she averaged 9.8 points, 3.8 assists and 2.6 rebounds across 24.6 minutes per contest. Now in her 14th season, Whalen will probably hover around that 24-minute-per-game mark, but can still be a solid source of assists and points on any gameday.
