Pena signed a contract to play with the Hiroshima Carp of Nippon Professional Baseball in 2017, Bambino Sedano of Puro Beisbol reports.

ANALYSIS
Pena was originally thought to have signed an NRI contract with the Giants, but it seems like the deal fell through within the past couple months. The 31-year-old will instead head overseas to raise his stock after putting together a .755 OPS in 87 big league at-bats last season, likely with the hopes of returning stateside in 2018.

Significant damage to Pena's right shoulder was found during a June 2013 procedure, his second right shoulder surgery, but he did not have any limitations at the start of camp and was thus able to solidify his hold on a utility infield role during spring training. While the switch-hitting middle infielder appeared in 81 games with Atlanta in 2014, he started only 29 and finished with a paltry .651 OPS, more than 120 points below his 2013 mark (.773). His strikeout rate jumped by more than seven percent, from 16.8% in 2013 to 23.0%, and his ISO fell by more than 60 points (from .165 to .102). Needing to create room for some of their promising young prospects ahead of the Rule 5 roster deadline, the Braves designated Pena for assignment in November, and it's unlikely the 29-year-old will earn significant playing time with any club in 2015.

Prior to undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery in June, the switch-hitting Pena saw occasional starts around the infield and pinch-hit at-bats for Atlanta. He posted a career-best .443 slugging percentage, with a 18:8 K:BB in 97 at-bats. The expectation is that Pena will be ready for the start of spring training, though his shoulder was found to be significantly damaged during surgery. Pena struggles mightily against lefties (.125/.170/.125 career batting line), and seems best suited to fill a utility role or perhaps work in a platoon, in a best-case scenario.

The Yankees trust Pena as a late-inning defensive replacement, but he just hasn't produced at the plate, going 4-for-40 in limited action last season. Even if he does make the big league roster in 2011, Pena won't provide any fantasy value, as the Yankees will look to get Eduardo Nunez's bat into the lineup should Alex Rodriguez or Derek Jeter go down for any significant period.

Just in case it wasn't clear already, Pena proved beyond a reasonable doubt last season that he will never be a successful major league hitter. He hit .227 with an absolutely abysmal .504 OPS in 167 at-bats. His glove and his versatility make him useful as a utility man, but he brings next to nothing offensively.

Pena made the Yankees’ Opening Day roster last season and proved to be valuable during the early months of the season when Alex Rodriguez was out with a hip injury. Though he managed to hit .287 in 115 at-bats, Pena lacked discipline at the plate (just five walks) and remains much more valuable as a defender. The Yankees like his glove and his ability to play all four infield positions, which should give him a strong chance to earn a utility role again in 2010.
