Past Fantasy Outlooks
2009
2008
2007
After a lack of progress last year, the 2009 campaign looms large in the development of Davidson. Coming into 2008, the Pirates had plenty of reason to expect a breakthrough season from Davidson. The lefty allowed just 44 hits in 59.2 innings the prior year, fashioning a 3-1 mark with two saves for Double-A Altoona. Things didn't work out the way Pittsburgh hoped, however, and Davidson spent the entire year at Double-A again. He has the potential to develop into an eighth-inning set-up man, but he needs to improve upon his 51:36 K:BB ratio before moving up the organizational ladder.
Davidson, 24, progressed through three minor-league levels to the big leagues in 2007, starting at Low-A Hickory before ending up with the Pirates as a September callup. While pitching in the Arizona Fall League, Davidson compiled a 2-2 mark with a 5.17 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 15.2 innings. Watch how well he performs in spring training. There's no reason to think he can't make the 25-man roster if he impresses new manager John Russell. That said, it's doubtful he'll have any fantasy impact in 2008 as a middle-innings reliever.
The Pirates added Davidson to their 40-man roster in the fall primarily because of his strikeout ability. A 22-year-old lefty, Davidson struck out 96 batters in 76 innings between Single-A and Double-A ball in 2006. He won't help out at the big-league level in 2007 but it's worth noting that he limited opposing batters to a .193 average last year. The Pirates also thought enough of him to send him to the Arizona Fall League, where he compiled a 2-2 record with a 5.17 ERA in 15.2 innings.
