Pittsburgh GM Neal Huntington wanted Hart to pitch in the majors oh-so-badly at the start of 2010, but his performance was simply oh-so-bad. Hart underwent shoulder surgery in May, making his season a lost one (6.75 ERA in 17.1 Triple-A innings). He's expected to be ready for spring training, but he's got a long road back to productivity. Hart had a brief run of success with the Cubs in 2009, but has been wildly ineffectively otherwise. His last showing in the big leagues came after his trade from Chicago to Pittsburgh. The 6-foot-4 righty went 1-8 with a 6.92 ERA and 1.875 WHIP in 53.1 innings. Hart will continue to see chances since Huntington traded for him, but there's little reason for fantasy owners to roster him -- even as a speculative pickup.
Hart came to symbolize the Pirates' pitching woes and poor trading decisions by the end of the 2009 campaign. Acquired in the John Grabow and Tom Gorzelanny trade, Hart looked lost after coming to Pittsburgh. With the Cubs, Hart won three of four decision and compiled a 2.48 ERA in 27.2 innings. As a Pirate, the hard-throwing righty struggled to a 1-8 mark, 6.92 ERA and 1.875 WHIP. While his true ability lies somewhere in between his 2009 extremes, Hart will need to re-establish himself in spring training as he competes for the fifth starter's role.
Hart was a long shot to win the team's fifth starter job a year ago, but wound up spending most of the season at Triple-A where he was highly effective, posting a 63:20 K:BB ratio in 57 innings. Hart struggled with his command in 27.2 major league innings, but he should have a shot to win a bullpen job in camp.
Hart showed good command at Double-A last year, but fell off after a 56-inning promotion to Triple-A. Still, he got a cup of coffee in the majors and pitched well in 11 innings, positioning himself as a darkhorse for the team's fifth starter job. That said, we'd be pretty surprised if he were to beat out the more highly rated Sean Gallagher, the more experienced Sean Marshall and converted closer Ryan Dempster. Expect Hart to start the year in Triple-A.
