RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2015

There was no outlook written for Steve Johnson.

2014

Back and oblique injuries ruined the majority of Johnson's season, limiting him to 69.2 innings, mostly between the Orioles and Triple-A. In a small sample size of nine appearances with the Orioles, including just one start, Johnson walked 13 in 15.2 innings. Johnson's fastball does not reach 90 mph, but he has an impressive 11.0 K/9 over 54 career innings. The Orioles have a number of candidates for the rotation and long relief. Johnson is one of the candidates, but he is not a favorite and Triple-A is his most likely assignment out of spring training.

2013

Johnson reached Double-A in 2009, but he stalled with average performances at both Double-A and Triple-A through 2011. His 2012 season went much better. Johnson held Triple-A opponents to a .202 average against and he was promoted in time to make 14 starts down the stretch for the Orioles. Prior to 2012, Johnson was knocked for his lack of command of his secondary pitches, but he struck out more than a batter per inning for the season while benefiting from a .229 BABIP. Look for Johnson to get a shot at the rotation in 2013. If he is anywhere near as good as he was in 2012 he could be a prime sleeper candidate.

2010

The Orioles picked up Johnson as part of the George Sherrill package, but left him unprotected in the Rule 5 Draft, which allowed the Giants to scoop him up. He is a prospect with plenty of upside following his best pitching lines yet in a nine-start stint at Double-A. The Giants could be thinking of adding Johnson to the bullpen if they are serious about keeping him on the roster all season. However, he'll initially compete for the fifth starter job against Todd Wellemeyer and Madison Bumgarner.
