2012
Wells came to Seattle last season in a deadline trade with Detroit and got off to a hot start with the Mariners. He was part of a four-man left-field/center-field rotation but getting hit in the face with a pitch and later suffering a sinus infection that caused an equilibrium issue knocked him off stride. He enters 2012 vying for the left-field job, and his stellar fielding ability and strong arm should give him an advantage over the competition.
2011
Wells was a late-season surprise for the Tigers, hitting .323 with four homers and 17 RBI in 93 at-bats. His power is legit, but given his career minor league batting average of .250, we don't expect Wells to hit anywhere near .323 when he gets a longer look. With the return of Magglio Ordonez in December, Wells' chances of having a platoon role have fallen considerably. AL-only leagues will want to keep an eye on Wells' role during spring training, but the odds are he gets shipped to Triple-A Toledo or starts the season as a depth outfielder for Detroit.
2010
Wells followed up a decent but injury-prone season at Double-A Erie with an impressive 21-game stint at the Arizona Fall League where he hit .351/.433/.662 with four homers and 25 RBI. Like many other young hitters, Wells needs to develop better plate judgment, but there’s no doubting his potential as a power/speed threat in the majors. He’ll likely need to log some time at Triple-A Toledo before getting a true look with the Tigers, but the 25-year-old outfielder could change that type of thinking with a decent showing in spring training.
2009
Wells, drafted in the 14th round out of Towson State University in Maryland in 2005, took a major step forward this past season. He hit .289 with 18 doubles, 17 home runs, 53 RBI and a .965 OPS in 75 games for Double-A Erie after being promoted from Low-A West Michigan. He continued his hot hitting in the Arizona Fall League. Wells' production got him added to Detroit's 40-man roster this winter. He looks to have plenty of pop in his bat but it remains to be seen if he can maintain his batting average over a full season in the high minors. We could see him in Detroit later this year if he is able to carry his production forward at Triple-A.
