2012
Downs finally got a chance to play in the big leagues last year and blossomed. In 199 at-bats, Downs hit .276 with 41 RBI and an .864 OPS. While Downs' bat showed some pop, he's subpar (at best) defensively and unusually slow for an infielder. Downs made a couple of starts in the outfield last season, and could make even more there in 2012. The Astros figure to pencil the 28-year-old in as a super-sub, but he'll qualify at second base in many leagues.
2011
Downs made the occasional start down the stretch last season while teammate Jeff Keppinger nursed a toe injury. While he didn't do much, it's reasonable to think Downs could win the utility infield job out of spring training, especially with the departure of Geoff Blum to Arizona. He'll need a strong spring where he shows a little more with his bat for that to become a reality, however.
2010
Downs posted a solid .302/.346/.495 line in Triple-A last season but struggled mightily during his tenure in San Francisco. He offers modest power/speed potential, and if he ever gets a chance with the Giants, it will be as a utility man.
