RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2017

Subscribe now to see our 2017 outlook.

2016

Tolleson emerged from the shadows of middle/late relief to take over the closing duties in May after Neftali Feliz faltered (and was ultimately let go), racking up 35 saves against just two blown saves. He was effective against righties and lefties alike and flashed solid strikeout and walk rates to go along with the save totals, so expect more of the same if Tolleson enters the season as the closer again as expected. Of some minor concern is Sam Dyson's elevated role (over Tolleson) during Texas' brief postseason run, with Dyson providing a decent alternative to Tolleson if nothing else should Tolleson struggle at the outset. Some may want to knock a buck or two off Tolleson's price just to be safe, but he looks well-entrenched as the closer for now, though the addition of Tom Wilhelmsen over the winter provides another option should Tolleson struggle.

2015

Tolleson was a pleasant surprise for the Rangers last season, as he made 64 appearances and carried an ERA below 3.00 for the first time since his stint at Double-A in 2012. He seemed to take a step forward in the second half, finishing the year with a 1.44 ERA and .202/.275/.283 line allowed over his final 25 innings (27:9 K:BB), and allowing just one home run after the All-Star break after struggling with long balls in the first half. Of some concern is that he posted an 87.3% LOB% and .245 BABIP, though the latter mark may not be completely out of line with his future norm after he had a .271 mark with the Dodgers during his only other prolonged stretch against big league hitters prior to last season. Look for Tolleson to push for a regular role in the Rangers' bullpen again this spring.

2013

After posting a lights-out 34:5 K:BB in 22.1 minor league innings, Tolleson got the call to the big club in June and quickly found things to be far more challenging. In 37.2 innings with the Dodgers, Tolleson recorded a 4.30 ERA with a 39:20 K:BB in 37.2 innings. He did have a 3.00 ERA and 10 strikeouts in his last nine innings, but Tolleson will need to overcome the walks to be an effective big league reliever. He has the stuff and the minor league numbers to suggest "future closer", but given the competition, it seems likely he'll open 2013 in Triple-A.

2012

Kenley Jansen, Javy Guerra, Shawn Tolleson. In an order yet to be determined, that could very well be the Dodgers' late-inning relief corps for the next few years. Tolleson had a huge 2011 between three minor league levels, posting a combined 1.17 ERA and 105:18 K:BB in just 69 innings. He'll likely open 2012 in Triple-A barring a lights-out spring, but the talent is clearly there to make an impact at some point this season.
