While he wasn’t the most efficient pitcher for the Rays, with a 3.74 ERA, Geltz was most certainly a favorite option out of the bullpen for manager Kevin Cash. He finished with 70 total appearances, g...

Steve Geltz: Past News Updates   ( ▲ View most recent update )

Geltz is a candidate for save opportunities with Brad Boxberger (abdomen) expected to miss eight weeks. "We have a number of guys that could try to fill that void for the first month of the year," manager Kevin Cash told the Tampa Tribune. "We'll have some opportunities that will present itself for more bullpen arms."

2016

Subscribe now to see our 2016 outlook.

2015

This small reliever has grinded his way through the minors. He has pitched in 241 games in his minor league career, but has held his own in the upper levels striking out 174 batters and allowing 95 hits in 144 innings of Triple-A work. He has enough stuff to stick around in a major league bullpen, but he is better off in low leverage work. While the Triple-A numbers are attractive, they do not truly represent the type of pitcher he will be at the major league level. He has low leverage ROOGY written all over him.

2013

Geltz only tossed two innings for the Angels last year, and had a 5.08 ERA in 33.2 innings at the Triple-A level despite a fairly impressive 33:14 K:BB, but he was absolutely dominant for Double-A Arkansas, posting a 0.36 ERA and 37:6 K:BB in only 25.1 innings. Geltz is only 5-foot-10 and may be a bit underrated because of his diminutive stature for a pitcher, but he should have every chance to earn a spot in the bullpen if he pitches well during spring training.
