2012
The Pirates will likely start d'Arnaud off in the minors, where he'll see regular action rather than serve as a backup in Pittsburgh. The infielder became a Clint Hurdle favorite with his aggressive baserunning, stealing 12 bases in only 48 big league games. Unfortunately, the holes in d'Arnaud's swing are huge. The 25-year-old compiled a 4:36 BB:K ratio and slash line of .242/.287/.528 in 143 at-bats. He still figures into the Pirates' plans, but whether he becomes an everyday player depends upon his ability to improve his plate discipline and consistency in the field. On the bright side, Pittsburgh has little depth at shortstop behind Clint Barmes, meaning d'Arnaud figures to get another shot in 2012.
2011
The 2010 campaign set back d'Arnaud and his prospect tag as the Pirates' top middle infielder in the minors. Playing primarily at shortstop with Double-A Altoona, d'Arnaud was batting just .217 in mid June before somewhat salvaging his year with a final line of .247/.331/.377. Even so, those numbers pale in comparison to his career marks of .270/.357/.413. The clock is ticking on this 24-year-old collegiate hopeful. He was successful on 33 of 40 stolen base attempts, but he'll have to have a big 2011 to regain the luster of prospect status.
2010
D'Arnaud, a fourth-round pick in the 2008 draft, split time between Low-A and High-A in 2009. He batted a combined .293, stealing 31 bases in 39 tries. D'Arnaud also exhibited an excellent batting eye, compiling a 60:72 BB:K ratio. He followed up with a strong AFL showing, where he led the league with 13 stolen bases and batted .296/.383/.383. At 23, D'Arnaud has already become the organization's top middle-infield prospect. He'll likely see the bulk of his playing time with Double-A Altoona in 2010.
