2012
The Yankees trust Pena as a late-inning defensive replacement, but he just hasn't produced at the plate, going 4-for-40 in limited action last season. Even if he does make the big league roster in 2011, Pena won't provide any fantasy value, as the Yankees will look to get Eduardo Nunez's bat into the lineup should Alex Rodriguez or Derek Jeter go down for any significant period.
2011
Just in case it wasn't clear already, Pena proved beyond a reasonable doubt last season that he will never be a successful major league hitter. He hit .227 with an absolutely abysmal .504 OPS in 167 at-bats. His glove and his versatility make him useful as a utility man, but he brings next to nothing offensively.
2010
Pena made the Yankees’ Opening Day roster last season and proved to be valuable during the early months of the season when Alex Rodriguez was out with a hip injury. Though he managed to hit .287 in 115 at-bats, Pena lacked discipline at the plate (just five walks) and remains much more valuable as a defender. The Yankees like his glove and his ability to play all four infield positions, which should give him a strong chance to earn a utility role again in 2010.
