2016

2015

After back-to-back seasons of receiving cups of coffee in Detroit, Holaday took on the role of backup catcher to Alex Avila in 2014. Holaday appeared in 62 games, hitting .231/.266/.276 with zero homers, six extra-base hits and 15 RBI in 156 at-bats. While his production at the plate was light, Holaday showed strides behind the plate with his ability to call a game and provide steady defense. The Tigers will bring back Avila to once again serve as the primary catcher, but Holaday will be challenged for the backup role by newcomer James McCann. At 26, Holaday is reaching a pivotal point in his career, and he’ll need to start producing better at the plate to carve out anything more than a part-time role in the majors.

2014

Holaday played 16 games with the Tigers in 2013, hitting .296 with one homer and two RBI in 27 at-bats. While his brief stint in the majors last year was somewhat productive, Holaday hasn't done much damage with his bat in the minors. In 280 at-bats with Triple-A Toledo last season, Holaday hit .260/.312/.372 with four homers and 24 RBI. With Brayan Pena out of town, Holaday is the early favorite to be the Tigers’ backup catcher on Opening Day. He’ll have to fend off veteran Ronny Paulino and prospect James McCann for the gig, but Holaday has the inside track. The Tigers have shown confidence in the 2010 sixth-round pick, but he’ll have to produce at the major league level to justify earning and holding on to the backup gig, or to be considered a permanent replacement should Alex Avila falter.

2013

The 2010 sixth-round pick received his first taste of the majors last season after an Alex Avila injury opened up a short-term need for the Tigers to carry an extra catcher. In six appearances, Holaday hit .250/.250/.333 with three runs scored in 12 at-bats. His minor league production has been only slightly better, as Holaday has hit .237/.314/.340 with 12 homers in 739 at-bats through three levels. Holaday was actually a big hitter at the collegiate level, but his lack of production at the plate in the minors has him projected to be a long-term backup in the major leagues. With Gerald Laird no longer in town to backup Alex Avila, Holaday will get his shot to take over that role in 2013. He should nab the gig, but his playing time and production will both be too limited for consideration in most formats.

2012

The Tigers selected Holaday in the sixth round of the 2010 draft. He hit .242/.304/.361 in 330 at-bats with Double-A Erie in 2011. With fellow catching prospects Rob Brantly and James McCann both more highly touted, Holaday has a long way to go before getting a legit shot with the Tigers. The 24-year-old profiles as a backup catcher in the majors.
