Betts made his first start at second base in the major leagues Saturday and is expected to remain there for the balance of the season, ESPN Boston reports. "As much as I said before about not moving him out of center field, here we are putting him at second base," manager John Farrell said. "I want to minimize the back-and-forth to him. In fairness to him, that would be the approach. It kind of points at Mookie remaining at second base."

The Red Sox want Betts to focus on outfield for the remainder of the season, CSN New England reports. "We think he can be a good player, and given that he's had less reps in the outfield and that's where he's been, he obviously looks like he's made quick improvements out there," general manager Ben Cherington said. "It looks like he's going to be plenty good to play out there if that's where the opportunity is."

2013

Betts, a fifth-round draft pick out of high school in 2011, went professional after committing to play for the University of Tennessee. He's an athletic infielder with an ability to impact games with his legs. He stole 20 bags in 71 games for Short-Season Lowell in 2012. Betts has a nice swing that should produce line drives as he learns to manage the strike zone and improve his pitch recognition. He projects very little power potential, but could develop as a gap-to-gap hitter. Presently, Betts gets his bat on the ball, but it's not always solid contact. He'll be pressed to improve his good-contact rate in his first year of full-season ball at Low-A Greenville.
