Claimed off waivers by the Padres in 2003, he faded badly in the second half posting a 5.30 ERA after the All-Star break. The left-hander had difficulty getting southpaws out. They hit him at a .294 clip forcing the Padres to seek a free agent to fill the situational hole in 2004. He's a lefty and will find work again, but he's certainly not a hot commodity.
2003
Matthews was given a chance to start some games last fall, but it's doubtful the new Brewers management will use him in this role. He will probably end up in middle relief.
