Cruz made a late bid to win the final bench spot as he went 3-for-5 with a homer Tuesday in a 13-3 win over Minnesota. Cruz raised his spring batting average to .278 as he battling Randy Knorr, Abraham Nunez and Luis Sojo to be the 25th man. Cruz' chance of winning a roster spot is hurt by the fact he can only play first and that the Pirates acquired left-handed hitting OF/1B John Vander Wal as a pinch hitter in the early days of spring training.

Cruz went .280/.349/.566 at Triple-A last season, which are very respectable numbers for an up-and-coming slugger, except for one thing: Cruz turns 35 in May. Cruz has an outside shot to make the Cardinals in a bench role and possibly provide a little pop off the bench, but at his age, he has very little upside and probably isn�t worth bidding on.
