RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2014

There was no outlook written for Wiki Gonzalez.

2004

Gonzalez was traded to Seattle as part of the Jeff Cirillo deal. He'll compete for a reserve role, but likely will end up in Triple-A. The Padres thought so much of him they outrighted him in September and dropped him from the 40-man, though he was guaranteed $3.45 million over the next two years. Despite obvious physical skills behind the plate, Gonzalez is not considered a good receiver. The Mariners are set at catcher with Dan Wilson and Ben Davis. Injuries look to be the only scenario that could alter Gonzalez's course to the minors.

2003

After the Padres dealt Ben Davis prior to the ’02 season, Gonzalez was all but handed the starting catching job. His 2002 season was littered with an assortment of injuries, capped off by offseason elbow surgery. He’s always been good at controlling the running game, and prior to last season, his bat was starting to come around. Most of the disappointment that was “Wiki 2K2” can be chalked up to nagging injuries, but that seems to be the norm with Gonzalez. Thus, the Padres traded for Mike Rivera as insurance. Nevertheless, Gonzalez should be primed for a nice rebound season behind the plate in San Diego.
