Whatever lesser imp Biddle made his 2003 pact with to become a closer collected its due in 2004 -- Biddle suffered through a miserable season that cost him not only his spot at the head of the bullpen, but his spot on the roster altogether. Someone desperate for relief help will ignore the hint of brimstone in the air and give him another chance.
2004
Biddle ended up being the only thing Omar Minaya had to show for trading Bartolo Colon, and even he had fallen apart by the end of the year, posting a 9.53 ERA in August. The only noteworthy number from his 2003 line is his save total -- just like the Expos, you shouldn't make the mistake of paying for them.
2003
One of the many, many Sox pitchers who had surgery prior to the 2002 season, Biddle came back and put up decent numbers as Chicago's swingman, making seven starts in 44 appearances. He's a poor man's Ramiro Mendoza, or at least in Chicago's case, a rich man pretending to be a poor man. And in a year where Spider-Man and Austin Powers ruled the box office, a swinger like Biddle ought to get a little more respect than he does.
