A one time top major league prospect with the Cardinals, Smith has hit hard times. He underwent shoulder surgery again last July and only pitched 37 innings at Double-A Reading with a 5.35 ERA. It appears that the Phils will give Smith one more shot this spring to make something come out of the Scott Rolen trade. But Smith might need another change of venue, especially with the wealth of young pitching in Philly's farm system.
