Past Fantasy Outlooks
2004
2003
Prior to the 2003 season, it was assumed that with his fantasy-friendly combination of average, speed, and decent power, Alvarez would slide into the first available outfield opening in Pittsburgh. After an early season suspension for violating a "personal conduct clause" in his contract, he was outplayed by both Tike Redman and J.J. Davis last season and stayed in the minors while they were summoned to the bigs. He will likely be given a chance to compete for a job with the Bucs next spring, where he will try to convince the club that he is still a legit prospect and not a future fourth outfielder. With the team's crowded outfield situation however, it wouldn't surprise us to see him back in Nashville at the start of the 2004 season.
A toolsy center-field prospect who lacks only plate discipline (26 unintentional walks in 507 Double-A at-bats last year), Alvarez is one of the best fantasy prospects in the NL given his skill set — average, speed, and decent power — and the Pirates’ hole in center field. Alvarez didn’t hurt himself in a September call-up (.308 BA). He’ll get an opportunity this spring and would be a Rookie-of-the-Year candidate if he wins the job.
