2013
There was no outlook written for Steven Shell.
2009
Shell escaped the Angels' system, got a chance with the Nationals and pitched surprisingly well in long relief. He could get an opportunity to win a rotation spot but more likely the team will keep him in the bullpen, albeit in a more prominent role. He doesn't have classic closer stuff, but if he keeps getting batters out he's work his way into a fantasy-friendly role.
2007
In two years above A ball, he has an ERA of 5.18 with unimpressive peripherals. He'd be a marginal pick in a 10-team PCL league.
2006
Arguably the Angels' top pitching prospect, look for Shell to continue his development in the minors and be ready should the need arise for a starter after the All-Star break. Shell doesn't have a tremendous ceiling, and he projects as a third starter at best.
2005
Shell began 2003 as a high Single-A All-Star but struggled with elbow soreness in the second half. When healthy, he can hit up to 95 mph with his fastball and has good potential with his secondary pitches, but they're still developing. He'll head to Double-A in 2005 where he could overtake Ervin Santana as the team's top pitching prospect.
2004
Shell began 2003 as a high Single-A All-Star but struggled with elbow soreness in the second half. When healthy, he can hit up to 95 mph with his fastball, and has good potential with his secondary pitches, but they’re underdeveloped and last season’s difficulties didn’t help the situation a great deal. He’ll start 2004 as a 21-year-old at high Single-A. He needs the time in further development but has good potential if he has a successful campaign.
