2013
There was no outlook written for Koyie Hill.
2012
At 33, the switching-hitting catcher may be forced to serve as organizational depth if he wants to continue his career given his average defensive skills and .544 OPS. Hill will try to win a backup role with St. Louis this spring.
2011
The Cubs tendered Hill a contract in December, and we're not sure why, given the presence of Welington Castillo who seems ready to assume the role of Geovany Soto's backup. In any event, if Hill is with the team, he'll back up Soto and bring his combination of no power, no on-base skills and free-swinging tendencies for a start or two per week this season.
2010
Hill got more at-bats than expected last year due to Geovany Soto's struggles, but did nothing to change his profile as a low-end backup catcher with average defensive skills. He'll go into camp once again as Soto's backup, but Wellington Castillo could push him for the job.
2009
Hill could land the backup catcher job if the Cubs decide not to re-sign Henry Blanco. With Geovany Soto firmly entrenched as the starter, there are probably only 20-30 starts available for whoever spells him. Hill has hit for decent power in the high minors, but he'll be 30 when the season starts, so it's nothing to get excited about.
2006
Hill didn't have a good year at the plate in 2005 and he's not guaranteed a spot on the big league roster this season, especially now that the Johnny Estrada trade bumps him down to third on the depth chart. He's still a bit young to give up on, but he needs to show improvement real soon before he becomes a career Quadruple-A catcher.
2005
Hill came over from the Dodgers in the Steve Finley deal and broke his ankle in a home-plate collision two weeks later, ending his season. He'll compete with Chris Snyder for playing time behind the plate in spring training.
2004
The Dodgers' catcher of the future. He hit .314 but with little power in Triple-A in 2003. A good power year will get him back into the team's plans but he needs to show he can handle Triple-A pitching before getting a shot in the majors.
2003
Hill is another Dodger catcher with big league promise. He skipped high Single-A ball to play at Double-A Jacksonville in 2002 and displayed decent on-base skills but with questionable defense. Needs to show a power spike in 2003.
