2005
Martinez made his major league debut in 2004, but struggled as a replacement for Scott Williamson in a mid-season call-up. He has control issues that followed him when he was converted to a reliever two years ago. His stock rose right after the conversion, but there was a significant dropoff in his numbers from 2003 to 2004 -- coincidentally, right after an age correction. His 2005 fate will be determined in the spring as several candidates are expected to vie for two available spots at the back end of the pen.
2004
Martinez had some success as a closer at Double-A Portland and was part of the original deal the team made for Jeff Suppan. That deal fell threw and he ended back with Boston. The fact that they would part with him as a throw-in indicates they aren't eagerly awaiting his arrival in Boston.
2003
Martinez, 24, started 27 games at Double-A Trenton with very little success. He was 5-12 with a 5.31 ERA in 139 innings (152 hits, 75 walks), striking out 127. He obviously needs to harness his stuff and will need a season or two at Triple-A.
