Rest-of-Season Projections
Alvarez was released by the Red Sox on Sunday, according to the Providence Journal.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez was once a highly-touted prospect in the Boston farm system. He posted a 3.60 ERA with a 109:32 K:BB ratio in 135 innings at Double-A in 2004, but has seen his ERA inflate and his K:BB ratio worsen since. In 15.1 innings this season at Triple-A, he's sporting a 6.46 ERA and an 8:11 K:BB ratio.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

Alvarez has had a taste of the majors, making three appearances for the Red Sox over the last two seasons. He doesn't have an overpowering fastball, but has excellent command and hits his spots well (a al Orel Hershiser). There does not appear to be room for him in Boston's starting rotation, so Alvarez is ticketed for another season at Triple-A. He could find himself as the team's long reliever/spot starter - a role filled largely by Bronson Arroyo over the last two seasons. But then again, that could be Arroyo's role again. We would not be surprised to see the Red Sox move him for needed talent during the season.
