Barthmaier re-signed with the Nationals on a minor league contract.
ANALYSIS
Barthmaier returned from Tommy John surgery last season and split time between the the Pirates and Nationals organizations. He showed he was healthy and pitched well (3.71 K:BB at High-A), so he should get an opportunity to start climbing up the organizational ladder again.

Claimed off waivers from Houston in the winter of 2007, Barthmaier tasted a bitter cup of coffee with the Pirates in 2008. He started the season struggling at Altoona -- registering a 4.86 ERA in 46.1 innings -- but was promoted to Triple-A because of a lack of depth within the organization. Barthmaier showed good control with Indianapolis, compiling a 71:27 K:BB ratio to go along with an improved 3.53 ERA in 79 innings. Knocked around for seven runs in 2.1 innings by Tampa Bay in June debut with Pittsburgh, the Pirates demoted Barthmaier back to Triple-A, where he labored until September. Though he wasn't impressive the last month of the season, Barthmaier will get a chance to compete for the team's four or fifth spot in the starting rotation during spring training.
Barthmaier struggled at Double-A last season and the Astros decided to cut ties with him in November. He'll be 24 when the season starts, and appears destined for another year at Double-A, this time in the Pittsburgh organization, where his chances of moving up are improved, but we're not endorsing him for anything until he shows signs of solving Double-A.
Barthmaier went 11-8 with a 3.62 ERA and a 134/67 K/BB ratio in 146.2 innings. He has a plus fastball and curveball, and tops out at 95 mph on the gun. He has problems with his mechanics at times, and like most young pitchers, his changeup needs work. He will start at Double-A Corpus Christi this season.
His strong stats are to be expected, as he was a 21-year-old in a good pitcher's league throwing to younger hitters. Barthmaier's fastball/curveball mix and size point to a conversion to relief in his future. He's a closer candidate in '08.
