2013
There was no outlook written for Mitch Talbot.
2011
Talbot won a rotation spot last season with a dazzling spring but had mixed results with Cleveland (10-13, 4.41 ERA, 1.494 WHIP). He definitely has the inside track on a back-of-the-rotation spot for Cleveland again this season but walks too many and doesn't miss enough bats to offer much upside. If Talbot hopes to remain a starter at the big league level, he'll have to cut back the free passes and limit the damage of the baserunners he allows by minimizing his home-run rate.
2010
Talbot entered the season in the discussion for the fifth starter's spot but lost out to Jeff Niemann. Elbow problems limited him to only 49 innings at Triple-A Durham, where he posted a dismal 4.47 ERA and 1.564 WHIP. He went 3-0 in the AFL but had a 4.36 ERA. He'll start the year at Triple-A Durham and will most likely be used for long relief out of the bullpen if he's called up by the Rays at any point.
2009
Talbot had a good season in the minors, and despite a not-so-great September trial with the Rays, is certainly part of the club's plans, even while ranking behind pitchers such as David Price or Wade Davis on the depth chart. Talbot showed excellent command last season, and his ability to throw strikes and get grounders could help a lot of teams. He'll get an extended look in spring training, as the Rays plan to take it easy on their front-line pitchers in March, but his only chance to crack the Rays' staff in 2009 may be in a long-relief role.
2008
This was a bit of a disappointing season for Talbot; the Rays were ready to give him a brief trial in September in preparation for a potential 2008 starting rotation bid, but Talbot's inconsistency this summer led the Rays to the conclusion he wasn't quite ready. He'll still get some high-visibility innings this spring and will get the opportunity to compete for a rotation berth. However, Talbot likely will be back at Triple-A on Opening Day, and more consistency there could lead to a midseason callup.
2007
Talbot, who came over from Houston in the Aubrey Huff deal, posted a composite 2.76 ERA and 1.23 WHIP for both the Astros and Rays at Double-A, with 155 K in 156.2 IP. That's a keeper. Look for him to move to Triple-A in 2007 and then compete for a job in the bigs in 2008.
