Minor league closers rarely make a successful transition to the same role in the majors, so don't be too excited about Shafer's 2.36 ERA or 26 saves for Double-A Chattanooga last year. At best, watch from afar to see how he handles the transition to Triple-A and then the majors, but don't draft.

Shafer in 2005 emerged as a pitcher worth following, albeit at the lower levels of the Reds farm system. Originally used as a closer, the organization converted him into a starter last year, under the guise that it's difficult to develop a pitching prospect that throws so few innings. We'll see how Shafer adjusts to Double-A hitters before getting too excited about him.
