2009
Lumsden struggled for the second straight year at Triple-A, this time walking more guys (62) than he struck out (44) and allowing 15 home runs in 107.1 innings pitched. He was eventually removed from his starting role, and he would likely remain a reliever should he make it to the majors. The Royals dealt him to the Astros over the offseason, and maybe a change of scenery will help him re-tap his potential.
2008
Lumsden showed in 2007 that he is still a little way from being ready for the big leagues, as he had a 5.88 ERA with a 1.670 WHIP in 24 Triple-A starts. He's a lefty with a great fastball, so the Royals won’t give up on him, but it will take him a couple years to develop into a guy they can depend on in either the bullpen or rotation. Look for an encore in Triple-A for 2008, hopefully with some better control after a year there under his belt.
2007
White Sox drafted Lumsden as a sandwich pick (No. 37 overall) in the 2004 draft and then he spent all of 2005 on the shelf due to left elbow surgery. The Royals appear to have received some nice value in the trade with the White Sox for Mike MacDougal. He's a scout's dream: a lefty with a mid-90s fastball and not a lot of miles on his arm. How much value will begin being determined this spring.
