RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2013

There was no outlook written for Clete Thomas.

2012

Thomas’ status as a prospect to watch in the Tigers’ system hit rock bottom during an injury-plagued campaign in 2010, but the 28-year-old outfielder was able to bounce back last year. He hit 12 home runs and swiped 20 bases in 112 games for Triple-A Toledo while providing his typical strong defensive play. The Tigers don’t have any openings in the outfield this season, but Thomas could be an option if the team needs extra depth during the year.

2011

After seeing time with the Tigers in 2008 and 2009, Thomas was forced to spend most of his 2010 campaign on the sidelines with numerous injuries. The 27-year-old outfielder managed just 21 appearances with Triple-A Toledo, hitting .183 with four homers and 13 RBI in 71 at-bats. Despite the injury-plagued season, Thomas is still considered a reserve outfield option for the Tigers in 2011. While Thomas might be able to give the Tigers a decent fourth outfielder/defensive replacement, it's unlikely his role would be large enough to factor into fantasy value.

2010

Thomas was a bench player for the Tigers in 2009, but he saw extended playing time due to injuries and his standing as one of the better defensive outfielders on the roster. He finished the season with a .240 batting average, seven home runs and three steals in 275 at-bats. While he offers a little bit of potential with his power and speed combination, Thomas will once again be fifth in line for playing time in the outfield, limiting his fantasy value.

2009

Thomas earned a bench spot with the Tigers to open last season after a solid spring. He doesn't offer much for power but he does have a little speed which makes him intriguing to fantasy owners. Unfortunately, Thomas underwent Tommy John ligament replacement surgery on his right elbow late last season and will open the year on the disabled list.

2006

Thomas has the potential to be a major league leadoff hitter if he continues to develop. He made a quick transition from college to pro ball after being selected in the sixth round of the draft last season. He displayed good speed and a good eye at the plate over two levels of Single-A ball. He'll return to Single-A to start the season but a promotion to Double-A won't be far off with a quick start.
