2010
Canizares was never regarded as a top prospect due to his age (31 next season), but he could be a late bloomer since he may only now be figuring out how to play in the U.S. after defecting from Cuba. He makes good contact and showed more power last season. He could win a bench role with the Braves this spring, but his lack of a glove even at first base may make him a better fit in the AL as a DH.
2007
Canizares was a star in the Cuban leagues and had a strong debut in the U.S. after signing with the Braves. He hit .307/.368/.423 between High-A and Double-A. There's some debate over his age as he insists he's 27, but some reports say he's 32 years old. He may rise quickly in the Atlanta system as a result, but his upside is limited if he's older than 30.
2006
A former Cuban baseball star, he defected and played in Nicaragua for a year before signing with the Braves. Canizares insists he is 26 years old, but he has played eight years in the Cuban national series and his birthdate was once listed as Nov. 21, 1974, the Miami Herald reports. He put up strong numbers in the Nicaraguan league and was was named MVP of the Intercontinental Cup tournament in Havana in 2002. He could rise quickly in the minors as a result.
