Rest-of-Season Projections
2024 Fantasy Outlook
The Mariners snagged three seven-figure prep hitters in the first 30 picks of the 2023 MLB Draft, and Emerson got the biggest bonus ($3.8 million) and was first off the board at No. 22 overall. A lefty-hitting shortstop, Emerson has already gained good weight since the end of his high school season, up to 6-foot-2 and around 200 pounds. He slashed .374/.496/.550 with two home runs, 10 doubles and eight steals on eight attempts in 24 games across the Arizona Complex League and the Cal League. Emerson has been billed as hit-over-power, and indeed, he had a 17.5 K% and a 14.9 BB% in his pro debut, so the hit tool easily projects as plus. Defensively, he can play shortstop but may move to third base as needed. He isn't a plus runner, but has excellent instincts and gets the most out of his physical tools. Emerson could reach the majors sometime in 2025. Read Past Outlooks
Seattle bound with 22nd pick
The Mariners have selected Emerson with the 22nd overall pick in the 2023 First-Year Player Draft.
ANALYSIS
Emerson, a prep infielder from Ohio, has one of the best hit tools in his class. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound lefty hitter has a great eye, laying off pitchers' pitches while making contact at a high clip. While he will probably always be hit-over-power, Emerson's strength and power have been on the uptick, and he should at least hit double-digit home runs at peak. He lacks the speed and arm strength traditionally associated with shortstop, so second or third base could be his final destination. Emerson turns 18 on July 20, so he is one of the younger players in this year's draft.
