Returns to Red Sox on minor league deal
Dahlstrand has signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox, the Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old right-hander will remain with the only organization he's known, for an eighth season. Dahlstrand made eight starts in 2016 as he worked his way back from Tommy John surgery, and the results with Double-A Portland (6.05 ERA) suggest he hadn't quite regained a feel for his pitches. He will likely spend most (if not all) of 2017 at the upper levels of the minor leagues.

2016 Fantasy Outlook
Dahlstrand, 23, started the 2015 season remarkably well, tossing a 6 1/3-inning no-hitter among his first three starts before an elbow injury derailed his promising season after just four starts and he eventually had Tommy John surgery. He's been a slow developer in the system, spending three years in short-season ball and another season-and-a-half in Low-A Greenville before the promising 2014 season at High-A Salem. We'll need to see the status of his elbow injury. He's getting a long in the tooth at this point; Dahlstrand will need to be in Double-A Portland by the season's end to stay on track. He has a three-pitch mix (fastball, slider, change) and the team may want to continue him as a starter, but if he dials up the velocity on the fastball (90 to 96 mph), a shift to the pen would not be surprising.
