Gomez bounced back and forth between Triple-A Toledo and Detroit last season. He's not a great hitter but he did show a little pop in the minors last season and he plays solid defense. Gomez will likely enter spring training as one of Detroit's reserve outfielders but he shouldn't see a lot of playing time unless injuries strike.
Gomez spent the vast majority of last season at Triple-A Toledo receiving only a short call-up as an injury fill-in. He was re-signed to a minor league contract this winter and will provide outfield depth at Triple-A again.
Gomez was claimed by the Tigers off waivers at the end of the 2004 season. Manager Alan Trammell said he wants to see Gomez in spring training before deciding if he's a fit for the Tigers, but we would be surprised if he made the final roster given how deep the Tigers are in the outfield.
Gomez exploded during the early part of 2002 in Double-A, prompting a move to Triple-A. He cooled but put in a decent first season in Omaha. He'll challenge for a spot in the Kansas City outfield, but he will need more selectivity and power to be serviceable. Another year in Triple-A could season him for full-time duties in 2005.
He's a 24-year old center fielder who showed power, speed and improved plate discipline last year. His cup of coffee in Kansas City came in the midst of a season where he hit .295, 14 homers and stole 36 bases. He will be a part of the left-field picture in the spring of 2003, and should be considered Beltran-lite for now.
