Closer Watch

Mets: On Tuesday, the Mets placed closer Bobby Parnell on the disabled list with a herniated disk in his neck. There is uncertainty whether he will be able to play when eligible in eight days or if it will require surgery that will keep him out for a significant period of time. Manager Terry Collins will use a closer-by-committee approach and named everyone short of Tom Seaver as an option to pitch the ninth for the Mets. Included on his list were David Aardsma, LaTroy Hawkins, Gonzalez Germen, Scott Rice, and Carlos Torres. It is probably best to let the closer situation play out before committing to one for the long run.

Recommended Pickup

Jose Iglesias, SS, DET - With the suspension of Jhonny Peralta for what turns out to be the rest of the season, Iglesias will be installed as the everyday shortstop for the Tigers. When Everth Cabrera is included, many fantasy owners may suddenly have an unexpected gap to fill at shortstop. While he does not hit for impressive power with three career home runs, he has hit for average with a .322 batting average on the season. He is not going to dominate across categories in fantasy games, but he is a steady presence at the position that should be relatively available at a tumultuous shortstop position.

Other Recent Recommendations: Devin Mesoraco, Kole Calhoun, Mark Buehrle, Brett Lawrie, and Alex Avila
