2023 Defense Projections
Bentler's college football career has been brought to a halt because of an NCAA rule that prohibits athletes from playing college sports for more than five calendar years. A recent waiver for an exemption to that rule entered by the academy was denied, the TImes Herald-Record reports.
ANALYSIS
Bentley started his career at Iowa, sat out his first year as a redshirt, then played in 2005. He transferred to Army in 2006, sat out the prerequisite year due to transfer, then started for West Point in 2007 and 2008. Army had been awarded previous waivers to the five-year rule (defensive tackle Mike Gann, for instance), but in the case of Bentler, the NCAA stated that they "didn't want to set a precedent and affect how people interpret the five year window." Army athletic director Kevin Anderson commented, "I think it's a travesty not to let this young man play his last year at West Point."
