McNeill announced his retirement Thursday, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Recurring spinal issues cut short a promising career for McNeill, who was two-time Pro Bowler during his time with the Chargers. McNeill, 29, was cut by the Chargers in March when it became clear the neck problems would persist.

McNeill returns as the all-important starting left tackle in San Diego.
McNeill is slated to be the starting left tackle, but he is sitting out training camp due to his desire for a new long-term contract. If he misses any time, Brandyn Dombrowski would likely step into the starting lineup.
McNeil will once again start at left tackle for the Chargers in 2009.
McNeill is recovering from minor offseason shoulder surgery, but he is expected to be ready for the start of the season and will again start at left tackle for the excellent San Diego offensive line.
McNeill never missed a start and allowed only two sacks during a very successful rookie season. He returns this season as the starting left tackle.
With starting left tackle Roman Oben recovering from offseason surgery, the massive rookie has a good chance to make the starting unit in his first year. Coaches like his size and surprisingly nimble footwork.
