The Chiefs have released Cottam (neck), the Chiefs' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Cottam missed all of 2010 with a neck injury and has only 16-career catches in two seasons. Assuming he finds a new home, Cottam will not likely serve as anything more than a blocking tight end.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2010
2009
2008
Cottam's 2009 campaign was marred by gameday inactives and a lack of involvement in the offense before ending prematurely due to a neck injury in December. He was unable to participate in the team's offseason practices, so he'll have some catching up to do once training camp starts. Even a fully healthy Brad Cottam may be running third on the depth chart behind Leonard Pope and rookie Tony Moeaki.
Cottam managed just seven receptions in 2008, but the offseason departure of Tony Gonzalez drastically altered the tight end landscape in Kansas City. With Gonzalez out of the picture, the race to replace him is wide open, although Cottam figures to get the first shot. His large frame and good hands should help quarterback Matt Cassel in the red zone, but tight ends tend to disappear in offenses run by coach Todd Haley. Even with that limitation in mind, Cottam's size and opportunity make him an intriguing late-round dart.
The Chiefs plan to use Cottam (if he can stay healthy) as a blocking tight end this season. He has the receiving skills to eventually be a replacement for Tony Gonzalez, but not this season. He should not be drafted in seasonal leagues.
