Jones retired Sunday, just four months after signing a free agent contract with the Panthers, the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones wasn't thought to be an ideal fit with the Panthers, who use their tight ends primarily for blocking, but the announcement still comes as a surprise. Kris Mangum, Mike Seidman and Michael Gaines remain on the roster, though none of them posses a particularly high fantasy upside.

2003
Jones signed in the offseason with the Panthers, who were below average in tight-end usage last season. They ranked 25th with 12.3 percent of their total passing yards going to their tight ends (league average was 17.2 percent). Given they weren’t enthralled with Kris Mangum’s and Mike Seidman’s receiving numbers, does it mean Jones will be a big part of the Carolina offense in 2005? Not necessarily. The team basically considers its tight end a sixth offensive lineman. Although Jones might be the best pass-catching tight end on the team – he’s never caught fewer than 35 passes in a season – the Panthers are primarily a running team and Jones will have to relearn long-forgotten blocking techniques as his role has been more about catching passes than flattening linebackers.
Jones had a nice season in 2003, but all the changes in Arizona don’t appear to be breaking his way for 2004. New head coach Dennis Green is expected to use multiple WR sets with Anquan Boldin, Larry Fitzgerald and Bryant Johnson. There’s also the uncertainty involved with a new quarterback, Josh McCown. Jones has nice career numbers (3.4 catches, 35.6 yards per game) with nearly three TDs per season, but we don’t envision a big role for him under coach Green in 2004.
Three seasons ago, Jones was a premier tight end, but that is no longer the case. In his first season with the Cardinals last year, he caught 44 balls for 358 yards and just one touchdown. The team lost its top three wide receivers to free agency, so as the lone starter from 2002, Jones might claim some of those lost receptions. But the offense is likely to struggle this season with unproven WRs and a new quarterback in Jeff Blake. We'll pass on him as a starter, but in a deep league, he's worth a gamble.
